Never heard of such a thing as your husband used. Can't you plug in a light. If the light goes on you have power, if it does not, check the fuse box to see if you have blown a circuit or you need to throw a switch back onto on, or change the fuse if blown?
With regards to placing near your abdomen - weird - did you try other body parts, like head, etc?
you probably have 110v electric systems. We have 240v electric systems and there are no testers such as those you describe, here. All electrical things have to be accessed by registered electricians, even power leads, so that we don't electrocute ourselves and die horribly that way. Just like being on "Old Smoky" without the clamps to keep everything in place.
